Inquiry Based Learning
'Inquiry-based learning' encompasses a spectrum of pedagogical approaches that have student-led exploration, investigation, scholarship or research at their heart. Through inquiry, students identify and engage directly with the questions and problems of their discipline or professional practice, learning in ways that mirror its scholarly or research processes. The inquiry approach aims to facilitate both subject learning and the development of a range of capabilities and dispositions - such as critical thinking, reflexivity, autonomy, initiative and team skills - that are essential for both academic study and the workplace and, more broadly, for leading full and rewarding lives in our complex and challenging world.
We ran a workshop, in conjunction with the Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences (CILASS) CETL, University of Sheffield, on the 21st May 2008.
