Strategies for Students to get more out of Field Visits: Faith Guides and iPods

Places of worship are a valuable resource for student learning but often the value of the visit is linked to the quality of information and the style of presentation by the faith informant. In addition there is a particular problem for university students who need to go beyond basic information about history and artefacts.

It may be controversial to be critical about such important ‘emic’ inputs, but field visits are such an important part of our programme that we need to ensure that student learning on visits is appropriate for the level and focus of study. Thus, we are working with local faith communities to support and develop their inputs. Podcasts by way of iPods, developed from insider inputs, offer personal interaction with the place of worship. Faith Guiding is a new initiative, developed in Birmingham, through which participants learn how to ‘guide’ groups around their place of worship. We are working on a Wolverhampton based course, to be offered to members of local religious communities and our own students. This is accredited by the Institute for Tourist Guiding at level 2, blue badge level.
