Beyond Boundaries
Danielle Lamb
In the academic year 2008-2009 the Subject Centre for PRS ran a scoping study of PRS provision in non-PRS departments. ('PRS' subjects include philosophy; theology; religious studies; history and philosophy of science, technology and medicine). To find out more about the project you can view a PowerPoint presentation given at the 2010 ISLRC conference.
Just as there are learning and teaching issues that are specific to philosophical and religious studies, and which we aim to support, we feel there are similar specific issues involved in teaching courses with a PRS element to non-specialists, such as natural and social scientists, literature students, artists or historians.
We have produced a map of current provision, an analysis of key learning and teaching issues for this constituency, and a selection of case studies, all of which are available via the links below. Work is ongoing to initiate special interest groups for PRS academics working outside PRS departments, and to facilitate practice-sharing and networking.
These case studies give details about the experiences of academics teaching philosophical and religious studies in non-PRS departments.
